National Holidays

India’s states and areas celebrate national Holidays. These Holidays hold a significant importance in every state and Union Territories. India celebrates three types of national holidays. All government and private offices remain closed on these days.

• Republic Day (26th January)
• Independence Day ( 15th August)
• Gandhi Jayanti (02nd October)

Independence Day is Celebrated as a day of independence from the British empire. Republic Day is celebrated as on this day the Indian Republic adopted its constitution. While Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated to mark the birth anniversary of Mohan das Karamchand Gandhi, the Father Of Our Nation.

All India Public Holidays

As per Public Holidays 2024,a total 14 Public Holidays are followed in India, and on these 14 days all government banks and offices remain closed.Out of these 14 Public Holidays, 3 are decided on the state level and the rest 11 are decided on the national level. India’s major festivals of the different religions, most of them are based on the Moon almanac that falls on different dates every year. These Holidays are described below:

Mahavir Jayanti:  Mahavir Jayanti falls in the month of March and April Every year. It is a special festival of the Jain Community. This day is celebrated as the birthday of Lord Mahavir Swami. Mahavir Swami was the 24th and the last Tirthankar of Jainism.

Eid-Ul-Fitr:

Eid-Ul-Fitr is celebrated after the Holy Month of Ramzan on the first day of Shavvaal. The followers of Islam recite Namaz on this day and also pray for peace, happiness, and prosperity. According to Islamic belief, at the end of the month of Ramadan, the Holy Quran appeared for the first time. After the stay of Paighambar Mohammad in Mecca, The festival of Eid-Ul-Fitr started in the holy city of Medina.

Buddh Purnima:

Buddha Purnima is also known as Baisakh Purnima. This day is celebrated as the birthday of Gautam Buddha. This Day Lord Buddha attained Budhhatva. Buddh Purnima is celebrated on the Full Moon day or the last day of Vaishakha month. This day the followers of Buddhism visit Buddhist Temples.

Muharram: 

Muharram is celebrated to remember the sacrifice of life of Imam Hussain and his 72 supporters. It is celebrated by ‘Shiya’ and ‘Sunni’ both sects. According to Islamic calendar, Muharram is the first month of the year, which is the holiest and full of sorrow.

Eid-Ul-Azha: 

It is also known by the name of Qurbani Eid. It is celebrated after the 70 days of Ramadan or Eid-Ul-Fitr. The date of Eid is decided after viewing the moon. According to Islamic calendar, this is the most important festival of the Muslim Community. On the day of Eid-Ul-Azha, Goat, Sheep, or Camel is sacrificed.

Maha Shivratri: 

Mahashivratri is one of the major religious festivals of Hindus. This sacred festival is celebrated in the ‘Krisna Paksh’ of Falgun month on the fourteenth day. This day Lord Shiva appeared for the first time to the world and it is also celebrated as the Marriage anniversary of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. This day the devotees visit Shiva temples and coronate him and observe fast. Every day is considered auspicious to worship Lord Shiva but MahaShivratri and shiv Ratri have special importance.

Holi:

According to Hindu Panchanga, Holi is celebrated on Purnima or Full Moon day of the Falgun month. This day comes in the month of March every year. Holi is the festival of colors. After Holika Dahan, the next day Holi is played in the whole India and everyone hugs each other and gives best wishes. This festival is also the symbol of the starting of Spring season.

Ram Navmi: Ram Navmi is celebrated on the last day of Chaitra Navratri. According to Hindu Calendar, Ram Navmi is celebrated on the ninth day of the bright side (Shukl Paksh) of the Chaitra Month. This sacred festival is celebrated as the Birthday of Lord ShreeRam. On this day, the people of Hindu community offer prayers, observe fast, and receive the blessings of Lord ShreeRama.

Krishna Janmashtami: The festival of Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated with lots of joy, festivity, and devotion. According to Hindu Calendar, this day is celebrated on the eighth day of Bhadrapad month. This day is celebrated as the Birthday of Lord Krishna. The worship of Krishna Janmashtami is done in the midnight. It is believed that Lord Vishnu incarnated as Lord Krishna.

Dussehra:

Dussehra is an important religious festival and a Public Holiday. It is also known as Vijaya Dashmi. Dussehra is a festival that symbolizes the victory of good over evil.Lord Shree Ram killed Demon Ravana and also Goddess Durga killed Demon MahishaSura on this day. According to Hindu Calendar, dussehra is celebrated on the 10th day of the bright side (Shukl Paksh) of the Ashvin month. 

Diwali: The festival of lamps or Deepawali or Diwali is celebrated to mark the victory of Good over Evil. This day is celebrated to mark the return of Lord ShreeRam along with his wife Mother Sita after the exile of Fourteen Years. Every corner is illuminated with the lights of Diya Lamp and candles. There is a ritual of worshiping Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi. The festival of Diwali is celebrated on the No moon day (Amavasya) of Kartik Month of Hindu calendar.

Guru Nanak Jayanti: Every year on the Purnima date ( Full Moon Day) of Kartik month, Guru Nanak Jayanti is celebrated as the birth anniversary of the First Sikh Guru. This day is celebrated as Guru Parv or Prakash Parv. Guru Nanak was the first Sikh Guru and the followers of Sikh religion celebrate this festival with pomp.

Christmas: The followers of Christianity celebrate this day with joy as the birth anniversary of lord Jesus Christ. This the biggest and most sacred festival of Christianity. People start preparation from months before for the Christmas Party and gather together with family and friends to offer special Church services. In the evening, they party and celebrate.

State-Wise Public Holidays In India

Out of every 28 states, few states celebrate Labor Day on 01st May every year. While the Holidays are celebrated in Maharashtra on the occasion of Parsi New Year. In Punjab, holidays are given on the festivals related to Sikh religion. In Tamil Nadu, there are 24 Public Holidays.

Ad-Hoc Holidays

Ad- Hoc Holidays include those holidays that fall after the death of any respected national celebrity or on the day of Elections. The holidays due to Strikes, Bharat Bandh are also included.

Restricted Holidays

Restricted Holidays means a holiday that is optional. This includes those holidays in which an employee has the option to take holiday or not. For example, a company does not offer a holiday on Eid. One of the employees of the company is Muslim and he wants to take a leave on Eid. In this case, the employee can apply for a restricted holiday.

Compulsory Holiday

Compulsory Holiday is also known as a gazetted holiday, that is compulsory to take. If a holiday is decided, then it is implemented also.
