History of Jain Calendar 

The Jain word is derived from ‘Jin’ and it refers to ‘one who wins’. Jain religion is one of the ancient and popular religions across the world and it was introduced in the 6th Century B.C. Jain Calendar 2024: Importance of Major Fast and Festivals

Rohini Vrat: People of the Jain community keep fast on Rohini Vrat day. It falls on every month and it is observed when Rohini Nakshatra prevails after sunrise. Women mainly observe the fast for their husband’s long life. 

Meru Trayodashi: The festival of Meru Trayodashi is one of the prime festivals in Jainism and is celebrated every year on the Trayodashi date of Krishna Paksha of Meru Trayodashi Paush month. The Jain festival is celebrated in memory of Pingal Kumar.

Phalgun Ashtanika Start: The festivities come three times a year. The belief is that, during this time the deities come from heaven and perform the religious tasks continuously for eight days in Nandishwar Island. People celebrate the festival cheerfully and keep all their faith. 

Samvatsari Event: The event is celebrated on the Shukla Panchami of Bhadra month. During this festival, people indulge in different activities like penance, and sacrifice, & are fully devoted to faith for seven days, and celebrate the eighth day as a grand festival. The Digambar community refers to the occasion as ‘Daslakshan’ and the Shvetambara community people call it the ‘Paryushan’ festival. On the day, Jain people keep fast and also follow specific rules strictly. 

Mahavir Jayanti: For the Jain community, Mahavir Jayanti is one of the inauspicious events. The festival in the Jain religion is celebrated as the birth anniversary of Lord Mahavir, the 14th and last Tirthankar of Jain culture. Vardhaman Mahavir was born in 599 BC and as per Hindu Panchang, it is celebrated on the 13th day of Chaitra Month. It is celebrated with great faith in Trayodashi Tithi of Chaitra Shukla. 

Lakshmi Puja: There is special importance to Lakshmi Puja in the Jain religion. The festival is celebrated on the Tithi when Lord Mahavir attained salvation. On the day people start new work or activities. It is believed that starting any work on an inauspicious day will provide proven results. 

Oli Aarambh: There is special importance of penance in the Jain religion and thus Oli Aaarambh is considered crucial for the community. It occurs twice a year and is celebrated for nine days. The first Navapad is celebrated in the Chaitra month, between March and April, and the second in the Ashwini month, between September and October. These nine days are fixed for penance and fasting. 

Kartik Rath Yatra: It is a very crucial festival in the Jain religion and is celebrated in the Kartik month. On this day, Jain people take out the Rath Yatra with devotion.
